Why Does Kindness go Viral?

News headlines always seem to be full of celebrity dirty washing or natural disasters of one kind or another from around the world, we have reality shows focussing on the negative aspects of life such as Benefits Street or Undateables and it seems people can't get enough of it. According to Psychology Today our obsession with bad news and disaster is down to our brains being hard-wired for bad news because our caveman ancestors had to look out for the negative things around them just to stay alive.

We Love Kid President

If you haven't yet seen the awesome Kid President videos you really must. Kid President, also known as 10-year-old Robby Novak, went viral in 2013 with inspirational videos you can't help but share. He creates the videos with his brother-in-law Brad Montague, a videographer and director of a summer camp for teenagers called GO! A Los Angeles company called SoulPancake, run by The Office actor Rainn Wilson, distributes the videos through its video channel.

Whatever You Do, Don’t Make Eye Contact. Or Should We?

I thought this was a strange thing to say, firstly because she was a girl, and because I thought she'd actually given that ball a pretty hefty kick. It's not uncommon to hear people saying "don't throw/kick/hit like a girl" – in fact, writing this I realise I've said it to my own child - but this got me wondering when exactly it became ok to use the term as an insult? And more generally, why are we so quick to insult when we could be celebrating?

End of an Era at BPS Research Digest

If you're keen on psychology in any of its guises you'll be familiar with the British Psychological Society's (BPS's) Research Digest. The Research Digest has been instrumental in making psychology accessible and applicable, it's quite simply awesome. Sadly though the editor, Christian Jarett, has decided to move on to other things.
